Chapter 14
Jack pushed through the door to the packed café and headed to the counter lined with
people.
“Morning, Jack,” Crystal smiled.
“Morning.”
“Just coffee?”
“Yeah.”
She nodded at him and reached under the counter to retrieve a travel mug. There was a
knowing little something in her smile. The lack of a lecture about showing up late for breakfast two days in a row told him all he needed to know. Word traveled fast and it seemed someone had run their mouth about his newest affair.
“No badgering about the toast?”
“Nope,” she handed him the mug. “A nice piece of ass is worth missing breakfast. Don’t
forget to bring that back,” she nodded at the mug.
“Thanks,” he headed back out the door, annoyance dancing across his shoulders.
He’d never had a problem with Crystal referring to any of his past lovers as “a nice piece of ass”. Most of them did have a nice ass so there had been no need to argue the point but that title aimed at David bothered him. It shouldn’t have but it did and that bothered him more.
He scowled his way to the boat and climbed aboard. He had another fishing charter and
that meant he had a bit of prep work to do so he let the routine push the topic out of his head.
He was out on the deck setting up the fishing rods when he saw David striding down the
dock, hands stuffed in his coat pockets. He couldn’t deny the joyous little dance his heart did, one that had nothing to do with wanting to get his hands on his ass. He wanted to wrap him in his arms and hold him close, spend a few moments in his mouth, and stare into those glimmering blue eyes. Damn it all to hell, he was falling in love with a man destined to walk back out of his life. They were only days into this thing and he had an undeniable case of puppy love. He was an idiot.
He tried to look a lot less annoyed than he felt by the time David reached the boat. He
expected him to climb aboard and ask to go along for the ride and he intended to let him. Instead, David stayed on the dock.
“Just a morning charter this time?” David asked.
“I’ve got another one this afternoon so it’ll be a full day.”
“Any idea when the second one will be done?”
“We leave at one o’clock so if it’s a good day three o’clock. If it’s not I might not be
back until sunset.”
“Ok. I’ll keep an eye out for you.”
“You’re not coming along?”
“No, I’ve got some research to do, pictures to take, you know,” David shrugged. “I’ll see
you tonight.”
“Ok,” he nodded back just as annoyed at the disappointment as he was the eager
anticipation David’s refusal had ground under its heel.
David was right. They needed a little distance from each other and he needed to spend a
day out on the water fishing with tourists, reminding himself what life was like without him. He couldn’t afford to be brokenhearted
